For the past 5 years, the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association, The Honolulu Advertiser and the Department of Education has been honoring one outstanding senior from every public high school throughout the state who best exemplifies citizenship in school and the community.  These 44 students from public and charter schools are honored with the CITIZENSHIP AWARD that is a $1,000 continuing education scholarship, a feature in a special tabloid in The Honolulu Advertiser and a framed copy of their tabloid feature.

These CITIZENSHIP AWARD winners are not necessarily the most academic or the star athlete, but the student who have given back to make our state a better place and who best exemplifies the Department of Education's Vision of a Public School Graduate.  This vision is for all students to (1) realize their goals and aspirations; (2) possess the attiudes, knowledge and skills necessary to complete in a global society and to be an effective family member; (3) exercise the rights & responsibilities of citizenship; and (4) pursue post-secondary education and/or careers without need for remediation.

The scholarship application process to seek the best of the class of 2009 is closed.  These outstanding citizens were chosen from an application process from within their respective high schools.  CITIZENSHIP AWARD WINNERS were honored at a recognition luncheon on May 22nd at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Hotel.
